Head Referee Pat Hayhurst reviews freestyle rules prior to the start of competition

April 25, 2016    |    Over 150 girls from 10 California counties converged on South El Monte HS for the 3rd annual Angel City Grand Prix held on April 23, 2016. After a review of freestyle rules from the head referee and a welcome from Ricardo Padilla of the El Monte Union High School District Board of Education, the girls were honored to receive a special message from Tatiana Suarez Padilla, current contestant on TUF 23 airing on Fox Sports 1.
“You may have plans for yourself, and they may not always go your way,” Tatiana said. “But, what you do from there – how you persevere – will make you who you are today.”
“Don’t allow life’s challenges to hold you down,” she continued. “Choose to overcome anything and everything that comes your way. Rejoice in your sufferings, because you will only become better equipped to deal with obstacles.”

Throughout the competition, the girls did just that. They met the obstacles before them and persevered even when their plans didn’t go their way. The girls competed in 5 different age divisions. At the end of the tournament, medals were awarded to the top 3 finishers in each of the 37 brackets. Each champion was awarded a Beat the Streets Los Angeles t-shirt. All Intermediate, Schoolgirl, and Novice division champions were awarded with headbands sponsored by WrestlingMart. All Cadet and Junior division champions were awarded with a CHAMPION–emblazoned gear bag, also courtesy of WrestlingMart.
For their achievements, Sumaya Lazaro and Amara Devericks, respectively, were named lower-weight and upper-weight Outstanding Wrestlers. Sumaya competed in the Intermediate division, 65 pound weight class, winning all 3 of her matches by technical fall without surrendering a point. Amara competed in the Junior division, 198 pound weight class, winning by a fall and two technical falls. These two wrestlers also received a $25 gift certificate to WrestlingMart for their accomplishment.
BTSLA thanks all those who made the Angel City Grand Prix live up to its billing as the premier all-girls freestyle tournament in Southern California. The event was made possible thanks to the hard work and contributions of California USA Wrestling, the City of South El Monte, Wrestling Mart, the South El Monte HS wrestling program, BTSLA staff and volunteers, and all the wrestlers, coaches, and fans in attendance.
