Girls wrestling shines at the 5th annual Angel City Grand Prix

April 16, 2018 | On Saturday, April 7, 2018, athletes from Southern California, Northern California and Arizona assembled in the gymnasium at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, California to participate in the 5th annual Angel City Grand Prix. Contestants competed in Junior, Cadet, Schoolgirl, Novice, and Intermediate age divisions and wrestled a total of 207 matches. The top three contestants in each weight class were awarded medals and each champion received an Angel City Grand Prix t-shirt.

In addition, each Junior, Cadet, and Schoolgirl division champion received a custom Angel City Grand Prix backpack courtesy of sponsor Cliff Keen, and each Novice and Intermediate division champions received a custom Angel City Grand Prix cinch bag. Katie Gomez (LAWC) and Emmily Patneaud (Palomino Academy) were named the lower and upper weight most outstanding wrestlers, respectively, and awarded with a custom Beat the Streets Los Angeles women’s singlet provided by Cliff Keen.

City of South El Monte Councilmember Hector Delgado was instrumental in securing Rio Hondo College as the venue for the Angel City Grand Prix. Hector said, “The interest and success of our Angel City Grand Prix Event is made possible through the collaboration efforts of those trailblazers that believe in academic and athletic excellence for our youth. Beat the Streets Los Angeles continues to raise the bar and set the standard in providing opportunities for tomorrow’s leaders.”

Following the event, Rio Hondo College Athletic Director Steve Hebert said, “We at Rio Hondo College were very honored to assist in the promotion of girl’s wrestling by hosting the Angel City Grand Prix.  Working with the Beat the Streets Los Angeles program was a pleasure and we look forward to partnering with them on projects in the future as this sport grows in popularity.”

Beat the Streets Los Angeles extends a heartfelt thanks all the wrestlers, volunteers and people that made the Angel City Grand Prix such a successful and rewarding event for all. Special thanks to the Beat the Streets Los Angeles wrestling programs at South El Monte, Fremont, San Pedro, and the Downtown Academy for their assistance with set-up, scorekeeping, and clean-up and to all those who assisted with the brackets and staging. Thank you, one and all, for making the Angel City Grand Prix the premiere all-girls freestyle wrestling tournament in Southern California.
