2020-21 Season in Review

Posted: June 18, 2021

As we conclude the 2020-21 school year, we are grateful to look back on a season of memorable accomplishments and programs for the Beat the Streets LA community.

Tomorrow’s Leaders Program

Starting last fall, we began the Tomorrow’s Leaders Program, to more fully live up to our promise of Building Tomorrow’s Leaders. Twenty-one of our most exemplary Beat the Streets LA alumni who are now upperclassmen in high school or recent graduates took part in eleven virtual workshops with the goal of preparing them for academic and professional success. The series of workshops featured a wide array of motivational, professional, and educational guests.

Fall, Winter, and Spring Academy Programs

Throughout the school year, Beat the Streets LA provided three 6-week Academy programs at 11 locations throughout Los Angeles and surrounding communities. At each location, the youth of Beat the Streets LA took part in outdoor workouts, workbook activities, zoom activities, and a friendly team-point competition. Over 450 youth took part in the academy programs.

Foundation Grants

Recently, Beat the Streets LA was an honored recipient two generous grants from the LA84 Foundation and West Coast Sports Associates. The grant awarded by the LA84 Foundation, in particular, was the second largest grant in the nine-year history of Beat the Streets LA.

Women’s Coaching Seminar

On June 2, Beat the Streets LA held a women’s coaching recruitment seminar with the USA Wrestling Assistant National Women’s Coach and 2012 Olympian, Clarissa Chun. As Beat the Streets LA looks to create more opportunities for girls and women in wrestling, more events like this will be forthcoming. Thank you Clarissa for hosting a great fireside chat!

Next Up, Summer

This summer, several Beat the Streets LA programs will continue to hold outdoor workouts two to three times per week. Recently, 15 of our youth had the opportunity to attend a wrestling clinic featuring Olympic champion Kyle Snyder and World champion David Taylor. Throughout the summer, we will send many of our youth to various other camps and clinics. Stay tuned for more details about these activities.

Have a great summer!
