Tomorrow’s Leaders Explore Life on Campus at Cal State University Bakersfield

Posted: October 10, 2025

On Sunday, October 5th, Beat the Streets LA brought 70 Tomorrow’s Leaders from Los Angeles to Cal State University Bakersfield for a full day of college exploration and connection.

The day kicked off with brunch at the campus cafeteria — their first real glimpse into college life. Our Tomorrow’s Leaders had a great time exploring the space, sampling different food options, and getting a feel for what campus dining is all about.

In the Classroom – FAFSA, Eligibility & Applications

After brunch, the group gathered in one of CSUB’s classrooms for a hands-on workshop about college admissions, financial aid, and athletic eligibility. University staff guided students through the FAFSA process, explained its importance, and discussed how athletics connects to academics. For many, it was their first introduction to the connection between college sports and coursework — and what it takes to qualify to compete at the next level.

Campus Tour – Dorms, Student Life & Resources

Next came a guided campus tour. Students visited the dorms, learned the difference between single and double-suite setups, and spoke with Resident Assistants about living on campus and the support systems available. The tour continued through the Student Union Center, where students discovered the wide range of clubs, organizations, and campus resources that help build community and connection at CSUB.

Recreation & Wrestling – Health, Fitness & Competition

The final stop was the Student Recreation Center, home to everything from a full fitness facility to an indoor rock-climbing wall. Staff emphasized the importance of physical activity not just for athletes, but as a tool for managing stress and maintaining mental and physical wellness.

The day wrapped up with a visit to the Division I CSUB wrestling team’s practice, where students watched live drills and heard directly from student-athletes like Jacob Bell about balancing academics, athletics, and life on campus.

Experiences like this turn aspiration into action — helping our students see themselves not as visitors, but as future scholars, leaders, and athletes.

A huge thank-you to Lou Montano, a two-time NCAA All-American, Hall of Fame inductee, and current Director of the High School Equivalency Program at CSUB, for helping organize this visit. And special thanks to longtime Beat the Streets supporter and collaborator, CSUB Head Wrestling Coach Luke Smith, for welcoming our Tomorrow’s Leaders to campus.
