November 21, 2014 | With the 2014 – 2015 season fully underway, BTSLA’s Pre-Season Kick-off Event marked the first competition of the season. The unique format saw Cornell University alum, NCAA All-American, and BTSLA Board Member Tyler Baier offer a brief skills clinic followed by athletes participating in 3 side-by-side competitions.

Events included a Takedown Tournament, and for the first time, an Attack Bandz Tournament and Handstand Walk contest. The first time events were the talk of the crowd and definitely garnered the most applause.

“The Attack Bandz are a great tool to introduce competitive wrestling to our beginning and new wrestlers. The kids showed some impressive skill and savvy in battling for the Attack Bandz points.” said Program Director Kevin Lake.

“The Handstand Walk contest was the result of working to motivate our athletes to focus on core muscle strength and stability in their daily training and it was great to see several athletes achieve personal bests in walking on their hands.” said Lake.

The event was hosted by San Pedro High School Wrestling and award winners were honored by National School Resource Officer of the Year, Los Angeles School Police Sgt. Jess Arana, and San Pedro High School Head Wrestling Coach Roman Hernandez. “I am proud and grateful for the work of Beat the Streets here in San Pedro. I saw many San Pedro youth compete for the very first time, and couldn’t believe the perseverance they showed while competing out there. I believe so strongly in the mission of BTSLA and am just glad to have San Pedro Wrestling be a part of it.” said Hernandez.

BTSLA’s next competition event will occur on December 14th at Roybal High School in Central Los Angeles.
