Tokyo Olympics Recap

Posted: August 9, 2021

The week-long span of wrestling concluded on Saturday in the Tokyo Olympics, with the United States taking home nine medals in a dominant finish full of historic performances.

The nine medals earned not only pushed the U.S. wrestling team ahead of the Russian Olympic Committee and Japan to the top of the medal board, but also marked the most medals earned by the U.S. since the 1984 Olympics. Impressively, the men’s freestyle team also medaled in all five weight classes they sent.

Additionally, Tamyra Mensah-Stock became the first-ever black woman to become an Olympic champion, while Gable Steveson will join Kyle Snyder and Henry Cejudo as the third American on the top 15 list of youngest freestyle wrestling Olympic champions.

Among this year’s Olympians, Tamyra Mensah-Stock (gold), Kyle Snyder (silver), Adeline Gray (silver), Kyle Dake (bronze), and Helen Maroulis (bronze) have previously worked with Beat the Streets LA to provide elite wrestling clinics to the Los Angeles student-athlete community. Tamyra Mensah-Stock was even the latest featured clinician at the 2019 Beat the Streets LA Girls Futures Camp!

Sarah Hildebrandt (bronze), Jacarra Winchester, and Kayla Miracle have also supported Beat the Streets LA by competing in past Annual Benefits.

Beat the Streets LA hopes to host many of these stars again soon. With the 2028 Summer Olympics being held in Los Angeles in just seven years, there will be many opportunities to help grow the sport of wrestling.
